Robert O'Neill

Chief Executive Officer

Mr. O’Neill was the cofounder of Canadian Hotel Income Properties Real Estate Investment Trust (“CHIP REIT”) in 1997 and served as its President and Chief Executive Officer until September 1998. Mr. O’Neill was also a cofounder of the Coast Hotel chain in 1972. In 1988, he was instrumental in managing the sale of the Coast Hotel chain to OKABE Co. of Tokyo and was retained to manage it as the President and Chief Executive Officer until 1991. Mr. O’Neill was President and Chief Operating Officer of National Caterers Ltd. and O’Neill Railway Catering Ltd. from 1977 to 1991. National Caterers Ltd. was Canada’s largest operator and supplier of remote site construction camps providing food, lodging and support services for construction workers. O’Neill Railway Catering Ltd. served both the CP Rail in Western Canada and the BC Railway in British Columbia on and offline.

Mr. O’Neill was nominated for Canada’s Entrepreneur of the Year in 1998. In 2004, he received two awards, the Industry Entrepreneur Award from the Vancouver branch of the Canadian Foodservice Association, and the Distinguished Alumni Award for Entrepreneurial Innovation from the B.C. Institute of Technology. Mr. O’Neill is recognized as a leading authority in the hotel industry and is a regular speaker at industry conferences in Canada and the U.S. Mr. O’Neill is a graduate of the British Columbia Institute of Technology, Hotel and Foodservice Program, and received his diploma in Hotel Management in 1972. He is a former Secretary of the Canadian Council of the Young Presidents’ Organization and a current member of the World Presidents’ Organization.

Ian McAuley

President

Mr. Ian McAuley serves as the President of American Hotel Income Properties REIT (GP) Inc., the General Partner of American Hotel Income Properties REIT LP.  In 2000, Mr. McAuley was a co-founder of Superior Lodging Corp., one of Canada’s largest developers of limited and select-service hotel properties and served as its President and Chief Operating Officer until September 2011.  In 2011, he became the President and CEO of Continuum Health Care Holdings Ltd., a seniors housing owner and operator, where he led the transformation of the company by establishing a new strategic direction, improving operational performance, and enhancing shareholder value through a series of transactions which culminated in the final sale of the company’s assets in 2015 to Health Care REIT.

In addition to hotel valuations, feasibility analysis, asset management, and investment and divestiture expertise, Mr. McAuley’s experience includes the planning, development, finance, construction, franchising, and management of more than 135 hotels.  In 2006, he was a co-recipient of the Canadian Hotel Industry Entrepreneur of the Year Award from the Canadian Hotel Investment Conference. He began his career with the international hospitality accounting firm of Laventhol & Horwath, and was a co-founder and partner in InnVentures Hospitality Corp., a Vancouver-based boutique hotel management and consulting firm.  He has served or currently serves as a Director of the Hotel Association of Canada, Airline Hotels & Resorts Ltd., Northern Vision Properties Ltd., Hallmark Properties Ltd., and Theatre Calgary. 

Mr. McAuley holds MBA and BA degrees and a specialized diploma in Hospitality Administration.

AZIM LALANI

Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Lalani has more than 20 years of experience in financial reporting, corporate finance, operations, business valuation, taxation and risk management.  He was previously with Huntingdon Capital Corp. (“Huntingdon”) as Senior Vice President of Operations with responsibility for portfolio management and operations including leasing, property and asset management for both Huntingdon and FAM REIT properties across Canada.  Prior to working at Huntingdon, Mr. Lalani was Vice President of Real Estate and Risk Management at SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts, where he was responsible for portfolio performance and investment management including hotel repositioning and re-branding opportunities involving Marriott and Hilton.  He was also Director of Finance at CHIP REIT and a Manager at KPMG LLP in Vancouver. 

Mr. Lalani is a Chartered Accountant (British Columbia) and a Chartered Business Valuator.

Dan Miller

Chief Investment Officer

Mr. Miller has 30 years’ experience working for major lodging companies, consulting groups and REITs, handling hotel transactions including acquisitions, development, management & franchise agreements, lease negotiations, asset management and dispositions. He has been one of the more active buyers and sellers of hotels in the US, having closed nearly 200 transactions.  He serves as Principal of Lodging & Leisure Investment Advisors (LLIA), which he founded in 2008 to help hotel owners, management companies, lenders and investors with various challenges including acquisitions, management contracts, asset management, portfolio strategy, and distressed asset solutions.  Prior to LLIA, he was Senior Vice President – Acquisitions & Development for Kimpton Hotels.  Previous to Kimpton, he was Vice President – Capital Transactions for FelCor Lodging Trust, where he led the disposition of 54 non-strategic assets with value of $650 million.  His prior experience includes 12 years with Accor North America in various roles including acquisitions, new development, dispositions and franchising.  Prior to Accor, he was Development Director at Embassy Suites, Senior Manager – Development Planning at Marriott, a senior consultant for Laventhol & Horwath and started his career in operations with Hyatt Hotels.  Mr. Miller holds a B.S. from Cornell University and an MBA from Southern Methodist University.

Robert Hibberd

Special Projects Consultant

Mr. Hibberd’s role is focused on advising AHIP on acquisition and financing activities, public markets, and the execution of AHIP’s growth strategy.  He was formerly the founding Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President with AHIP.

Mr. Hibberd is a Chartered Accountant (British Columbia), a Certified Public Accountant (Illinois), a Certified Management Consultant (Honour Roll) with the Canadian Association of Management Consultants, holds the Corporate Finance qualification with the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Toronto.

Anne Yu

Vice President, Finance

Ms. Yu was appointed Vice President Finance on January 3, 2017. Ms. Yu has been with American Hotel Income Properties REIT LP since inception, and as Director of Finance, she was an integral part of AHIP’s successful Cdn$100.1 million initial public offering in February 2013. Ms. Yu has extensive experience in financial reporting, internal controls, corporate finance and Canadian and US tax. Ms. Yu focused on public company reporting during her tenure at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP where she was a Manager in the Assurance and Business Advisory Group. Ms. Yu also worked as Controller and Manager of Financial Reporting of Sterling Shoes Inc. for five years and Controller of Ventyx Software Solutions Inc. (formerly MDSI Mobile Data Solutions Inc.) for three years. Ms. Yu is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA) and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from the University of British Columbia.

Martin Pinsker

Senior Director, Investments

Martin Pinsker is responsible for identifying and evaluating hotel investment opportunities. Prior to joining AHIP, Mr. Pinsker held the position of Hospitality Asset Management Associate at TriMont Real Estate Advisors, a leading commercial real estate servicer. Mr. Pinsker was responsible for equity investments, real estate owned assets, performing loans, and non-performing loans that were secured by hotels and resorts representing over $1 billion in market value. Mr. Pinsker graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University and is a lifetime member of the Cornell Hotel Society.
